Semarang, Java, Indonesia

In 1982, Robert Irving was member of a small team from Newcastle University (led by Dr Stewart Evans) that spent two months in Java, Indonesia establishing a marine biology field course to be taught by staff of Semarang University in their newly-built marine laboratory at Jepara. The work which Robert was assigned involved helping to assess the variety and distribution of marine invertebrates found locally (mostly by snorkelling over the reef flats); teaching a short introductory marine biology course; compiling a catalogue of underwater photographs of species; and writing and illustrating a field guide for use by students on the course.
